Perspecta Receives new Contract Option of up to $2.7 Million for DARPA Cyber Defense Program

Chantilly, Va.— Feb. 6, 2019—Perspecta Inc. announced today that its innovative research arm, Perspecta Labs, will continue its work researching and developing cyber defenses against distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) under a new contract modification worth up to $2.7 million, dependent on successful completion of milestones.

The modification represents on-contract growth as part of DARPA's Extreme DDoS Defense (XD3) program. On the base program, Perspecta Labs researched and developed innovative techniques aimed at dynamically obscuring high-value cyber assets, detecting stealthy, low-volume intrusions, performing defensive maneuvers to mislead and confuse adversaries, and launching mitigation steps to repel both widespread and targeted attacks. Under the option, Perspecta Labs will integrate these techniques to implement, evaluate and demonstrate a multi-modal DDoS defense solution which combines these defensive capabilities.

Perspecta Labs Participated in DARPA-led U.S. Power Grid Cybersecurity Exercise

Chantilly, Va.— Jan. 30, 2018— Perspecta Inc. (NYSE: PRSP), announced today that its innovative research arm, Perspecta Labs, played an integral role in the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s (DARPA) Liberty Eclipse Phase II exercise in collaboration with the Department of Energy and the Department of Homeland Security to test grid recovery tools during a staged, multi-faceted cyberattack on a U.S. power grid. The event took place on Plum Island, N.Y.

The realistic exercise actually replicated a cyberattack and monitored its recovery in real-time. Liberty Eclipse Phase II is the fourth and largest thus far in a series of exercises under DARPA’s Rapid Attack Detection Isolation and Characterization Systems (RADICS) research program. The RADICS objective was to develop technologies for detecting and responding to cyberattacks on critical U.S. infrastructure, with an ultimate goal of enabling cyber and power engineers the ability to restore electrical service within seven days in the event of a major attack.

During the seven day exercise, performers on the RADICS program were tasked with using performer-developed tools to provide comprehensive grid situational awareness, restore supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) and network infrastructure, cleanse substations and defeat active adversaries to establish two diverse paths in order to re-energize, interconnect and synchronize two utility operators in a black start scenario. 

“Our experience with developing solutions to protect the power grid gave us unique qualifications to support DARPA during this exercise,” said Petros Mouchtaris, Ph.D., president of Perspecta Labs.  “As leaders in cybersecurity awareness, monitoring and assessment services, we were able to validate the success of our research and tools while assisting our customer, DARPA, in achieving this major program milestone.”

In the exercise, Perspecta Labs tested various technologies transitioning to commercial use under the company’s SecureSmart offering, including: the SHERLOC cyber-weapon hunting system featuring a new grid state consistency analyzer called Jolt that integrates ground truth feeder state from Advanced Meter Infrastructure as a telemetry source; and the MANTESSA cyber-physical early detection and situational awareness system, featuring novel machine intelligence techniques and statistical inference of out-of-band measurements, field reports and other data sources. Perspecta Labs also supported BAE Systems on the set up of a Secure Emergency Network. The company’s Distributed Assured and Dynamic Configuration (DADC) tool was used to efficiently generate error-free configurations for that network.

As a result of the exercise, the Perspecta Labs team gained actionable insight from utilities, observers and participants to improve the usability, expand the capabilities and continue the transition of its SHERLOC and MANTESSA solutions. As a leader in smart grid security and monitoring, the company has been a major contributor on the RADICS program, conducting research and delivering technologies in three of five technical areas for situational awareness, secure communications, and threat detection and characterization.

Perspecta Announces Partnership with Abaco Systems to Bring its 1553 Bus Defender Product to Market

Chantilly, Va.— Nov. 15, 2018— Perspecta Inc., announced today that its innovative research arm, Perspecta Labs, has entered into a partnership with Abaco Systems, Inc. (Abaco), to bring its 1553 Bus Defender™ product to market.

Warfighting systems are built for longevity and require a sophisticated means of communication, but with that comes advanced vulnerabilities. The 1553 Bus Defender solution from Perspecta Labs, developed on a Department of Defense (DoD) research program, protects weapons systems from both known and future cyberattacks.

Specifically, the MIL-STD-1553 (1553) data bus, designed long before the days of widespread computer network hacking, and the line-replaceable units (LRUs) on it are vulnerable to cyberattacks. Depending on the scope and nature of the compromise, adversaries can cause denial of service (DoS), exfiltration of critical data, neutralization or destruction of the warfighting system, loss of life, and mission failure. 1553 Bus Defender provides protection without requiring any modifications to LRUs – a key advantage over software-based approaches.

Perspecta Labs Wins Configuration Security Program with DARPA

(NYSE: PRSP) announced today that its innovative research arm, Perspecta Labs, was awarded a prime contract from the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to support the Configuration Security (ConSec) program. The contract, which represents new work for the company, has a base value of $5.4M and consists of three phases over a three-and-a-half year performance period.

The goal of the ConSec program is to develop technologies that can automatically generate, deploy, and enforce configurations of components and subsystems for use in military platforms, critical infrastructure and network-connected systems for the Internet of Things. The configurations must deliver needed functionality and performance while also mitigating vulnerabilities and minimizing the attack surface.

“Perspecta Labs will draw on its rich portfolio of research and development in machine learning and cybersecurity to deliver this work,” said Petros Mouchtaris, Ph.D., president of Perspecta Labs. “We are excited to bring our innovative techniques to identify, correct and prevent configuration errors in complex networks and distributed systems to our DARPA partner in support of their mission to improve security to critical military and commercial platforms.”

On the program, the Perspecta Labs team will design, develop, demonstrate, test and deliver the Optimized Context-specific Configuration for Attack Surface Minimization (OCCAM) system. OCCAM will automatically generate correct and secure configurations, rapidly and at scale, along with human-readable supporting evidence to facilitate transition of the platform to the improved configuration. Correct configurations are critical for the efficient and secure operations of systems.

Perspecta Labs to Debut Advanced Radio Frequency Sensor and Airborne Telemetry Technology at ITC 2018

Perspecta Wins Cyber Hunting Contract with DARPA

(NYSE: PRSP) announced today that its innovative research arm, Perspecta Labs, was awarded a prime contract from the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to support the Cyber-Hunting at Scale (CHASE) program. The four-year contract which represents new work for the company has a base value of $4.7M, not including options.

The goal of the CHASE program is to develop dynamic, real-time tools that can successfully defend large-scale, distributed networks from broad-spectrum cyber threats. The program aims to leverage iterative techniques to converge on the right data, from the right devices, at the right time to detect, characterize and thwart attacks.

On the contract, Perspecta Labs will develop, demonstrate and evaluate data-driven cyber-hunting tools that work in real-time, at-scale, and across multiple enterprise networks. Specifically, the company plans to design and develop WILEE, a set of components for threat detection and characterization.

The Perspecta Labs’ WILEE solution will accelerate the hunt process by translating high-level threat descriptions into possible concrete implementations using a variety of sophisticated analytic techniques, including adversarial planning, genetic perturbation and data-driven evaluation. WILEE will automatically prioritize hunt activities, inform data collection, minimize detection time and detect both known and novel malicious activities with high confidence.
